The Indonesian plastics recycler produces the rPET for Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite and Sprite Waterlymon bottles on two recoSTAR PET 165 HC iV+ bottle-to-bottle recycling systems from Starlinger. In June 2023, Coca-Cola Indonesia, in collaboration with Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Indonesia (CCEP Indonesia), launched the first 100% rPET bottles (excluding caps and labels) for its most popular soft drink brands. The recycled PET for this is supplied by a pioneer in the Indonesian recycling industry, Amandina Bumi Nusantara. The company operates a plastics recycling plant outside Jakarta with two Starlinger recoSTAR PET HC iV+ bottle-to-bottle recycling systems and processes 3,000 tons of used PET bottles per month. Two types of transparent rPET granulate are produced in bottle quality: for carbonated drinks and for still water. The company also supplies hot-washed flakes in the colors transparent and light blue.
“We chose Starlinger PET bottle-to-bottle recycling systems because they are among the leading suppliers of first-class recycling systems that are known for their particularly high performance and reliability,” says Suharji Gasali, Managing Director of Amandina Bumi Nusantara. “In addition, the approval of their process by Coca-Cola System Indonesia – a testament to the plant’s high standards and compliance with industry requirements – was a major factor in our decision. In our search for efficient and reliable recycling solutions, Starlinger’s excellent reputation combined with Coca-Cola System’s endorsement made them the ideal choice for Amandina.”
The two PET recycling systems were installed in fall 2022 by local technicians from Starlinger’s Indonesian subsidiary PT Starlinger SEA. The Starlinger team in the Surabaya branch takes care of machine installations, service and maintenance work as well as spare parts orders for Starlinger customers in Southeast Asia and offers rapid technical support if required.
Responsible procurement
Mith recycled PET from sustainably sourced input material at competitive prices, Amandina supports companies in achieving their sustainability goals. Amandina Bumi Nusantara works with the Mahija Parahita Nusantara Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by CCEP Indonesia and Dynapack Asia, to collect post-consumer PET bottles. As in many other Asian countries, over 90% of plastic waste in Indonesia is collected by waste pickers in the informal sector – known as “recycling heroes” by Amandina and Mahija. The remaining 10 % is procured through formal systems such as waste banks and other organized collection methods.
CCEP Indonesia has set itself the goal of making 100% of its packaging recyclable by 2025 and producing at least 50% of its plastic bottles from rPET. By 2030, the company has set itself the goal of collecting and recycling 100% of its plastic bottles and eliminating the use of virgin plastic in bottle production.
In addition to PET, other types of plastic such as PE bottles and PP cups are also collected and recycled in Indonesia. The government is working on developing strategies and action plans for dealing with plastic waste and promoting recycling practices. In 2019, a regulation was passed with the aim of reducing the amount of waste by 30 % by 2029. However, the implementation of the requirements varies. Private companies are often involved in supporting recycling initiatives and play an important role in creating environmental awareness and promoting sustainable practices. This can include financial support as well as resources and expertise for the implementation of recycling programs, especially in cooperation with local communities and organizations. For example, Coca-Cola and Dynapack Asia support the social activities of the aforementioned responsible sourcing platform Mahija Parahita Nusantara.
Certified food quality
PT Amandina Bumi Nusantara is the first PET recycling company to receive the SNI Marking Product Certificate (SPPT) from the National Standardization Agency (BSN) for the implementation of the Indonesian national standard (SNI) 8424:2017. This standard, which was introduced by the Indonesian Ministry of Industry, serves to protect consumers and ensures that products made from recycled PET meet quality standards. It includes strict qualification stages, precise sampling and testing and product evaluation procedures to ensure that the PET recycling process meets the desired safety, sustainability and requirement criteria. Since its launch in 2017, it has become an important reference in the PET recycling industry. In addition, Amandina Bumi Nusantara meets the standards of the National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM), Halal and FSSC 22000, which have approved the use of rPET in food and beverage packaging.
